ADVANTAGES OF NATURAL STONE FOR PATIOS

May 1, 2013

There are many different types of paving materials on the market that you can choose from when building your patio or walkway. You can choose from interlocking, stamped concrete, brick and much more. Interlocking paver manufacturers offer dozens of shapes, colors and textures. Many of those new designs resembles the look of natural stone – flagstone.

Why are concrete products trying to look like natural stone?

When living in a big city, surrounded by subdivisions, streets and cars, people try to create a natural oasis in their backyards which will draw them away from this chaos. Your garden is a place where you find peace and rest. When looking for natural textures for your project, why would you use concrete products faking natural stone when you can go with flagstone? Flagstone will bring a natural feel to your backyard and the exotic flavor of its origin like Africa, India or China.

If a natural feel isn’t enough of a reason for you, there is more!

  • Raising the value of the house. Natural stone is more a sophisticated material than concrete so when it appears in your backyard the whole property will stand out from the rest.

  • Never gets old. The huge advantage of natural stone is that it never gets old. Concrete products have a manufacture date so after 5-10 years you will know that the paver is 5-10 years old. Technology, shapes and colors evolve and it is noticeable even by people who are not in the industry.

  • Easy to maintain. When your flagstone is dry laid it is way easier to maintain it than interlocking. Natural stone is sold in huge slabs so you have fewer joints between them. Also those joints are thinner than ones between concrete pavers. This means that even if you have some weeds they have less space to appear and the thin joints do not provide good conditions for the weeds to settle in.

  • Natural can be modern. Do not think that flagstone must have an irregular shape. You can easily find huge rectangular slabs that will suit your modern style.

  • Slightly higher price. If you are looking for a good quality paver you have to remember that when buying manmade products, in order to receive good quality you have to pay for the whole process of creating that product. In this case the price of good quality interlocking is very close to natural stone which as we said gives you more advantages.

Landscaping is not something that you do every year so take the time to  consider what is the best material to use for your project.
